Where They Live

The golden jackal adapts easily to living in a variety of habitats. It has a large range, encompassing central and southeast Europe, the Middle East, north and northeast Africa, Southeast Asia, and India. Bengal tigers live mostly in India, but also in Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. The commensal relationship between the tiger and the jackal can only develop in areas where the animals’ ranges overlap.

Fun Facts

Bengal tigers have the largest canine teeth of all cats alive today—each tooth is up to 4 inches (10 cm) long!

The jackal is often portrayed as a cunning trickster in North American and European folklore.

The golden jackal has a taste for dung beetles. To find them, it sniffs out animal droppings and flips them over with its paw, revealing the beetles underneath.
